This article is about T.M. Krishna, a famous musician, who was chosen to receive the Sangita Kalanidhi award in 2024. This award is given every year by The Music Academy, Madras, to honor great musicians. However, some people have been unhappy with Krishna because he talks openly about sensitive issues like caste, politics, and music. His views have upset certain groups, and they have tried to stop him from expressing himself.
The issue became bigger because Krishna had written an article earlier about M.S. Subbulakshmi, a legendary Carnatic musician. In his article, he talked about her music and her life. He explored whether her music came from her freedom as an artist or whether she had to follow certain societal rules. He also wrote about her caste and her husband’s influence on her career. While Krishna praised her greatness, some people felt he disrespected her memory. Her grandson, Shrinivasan, went to court and said that someone who insulted her should not receive an award in her name.
The problem became confusing because there are two awards involved. The Sangita Kalanidhi award is given by The Music Academy, and another award, called the M.S. Subbulakshmi Award, is given by The Hindu newspaper as a cash prize to the Sangita Kalanidhi winner. Many people thought the court wanted to stop Krishna from getting the Sangita Kalanidhi award itself, but that was not true.
The Madras High Court ruled that Krishna can still get the Sangita Kalanidhi award. However, The Hindu was told to stop using M.S. Subbulakshmi’s name for its cash prize. This is because Subbulakshmi had written in her will that she did not want any awards, funds, or memorials in her name after her death. This part of her will was unknown to the public until now.
The court’s decision has caused some confusion in the media. Some newspapers and TV channels wrongly reported that Krishna could not get the Sangita Kalanidhi award. Others misunderstood which award was affected.
The court ruling does not affect other awards named after M.S. Subbulakshmi, like the ones given by the Tamil Nadu government. But it is possible that these could also be challenged in the future.
In the end, Krishna will receive the Sangita Kalanidhi award, and he can still get the cash prize from The Hindu, but without M.S. Subbulakshmi’s name. The court’s decision respects Subbulakshmi’s wishes. Krishna also says that his article celebrates her life and music, even though some people disagree.
