Vote Against Hate. How JMM Won Elections. The Hindu Editorial Explanation 25th November 2024.

The article explains the recent victory of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the Jharkhand state elections.

This win is important for the JMM and the INDIA bloc, which is led by the Congress, especially after the Congress faced a major defeat in Maharashtra. The victory in Jharkhand is seen as a boost for these parties, particularly because the JMM remains the main choice for tribal voters in the state.

JMM’s success in this election was not just due to its own popularity among tribal voters but also because of the support from its coalition partners—Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and CPI(ML)-Liberation.

These parties worked together, and their combined support helped JMM secure votes not just in the areas reserved for tribal communities but also in other regions of Jharkhand, including seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and non-reserved areas.

A key factor in the JMM-led alliance’s win was how they dealt with the BJP’s accusations of corruption against Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Despite the BJP trying to spread these allegations, voters did not believe the charges, and Soren’s position as the Chief Minister remained strong.

The BJP had hoped to build on its success in the 2024 general elections, where it had won most of the seats in Jharkhand, but their strategy didn’t work. The BJP tried to form a coalition with smaller parties like the All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSUP) and even got former JMM leader Champai Soren to join them. However, these efforts failed, and the BJP only managed to win one out of the ten seats contested by AJSUP.

Another important reason for the JMM’s success was how they managed to counter the BJP’s campaign about “Bangladeshi immigrants” in the Santhal Pargana region of northeastern Jharkhand.

The BJP used this issue in an attempt to stir up fear and anger among tribal voters and to create division between them and religious minorities, particularly Muslims. However, the JMM and its allies rejected this narrative, focusing instead on the idea of tribal unity and bringing people together. This approach worked well, and Santhal Pargana voted strongly for JMM, with 52% of voters supporting the ruling alliance, the highest in any region of the state.

This victory is also noteworthy because it is a rare win for a non-BJP alliance in North India while being in power. Most other states in North India have seen the BJP dominate, making it difficult for other parties to hold on to power.

Despite the win, the JMM still faces challenges in governing Jharkhand. While the state is rich in minerals, it remains one of the poorest in terms of per capita income. The JMM government will now need to focus on creating jobs and making better use of the state’s mineral wealth to improve the economy and the living standards of its people.

In conclusion, while the JMM’s win is a significant victory for the party and its allies, it also comes with the responsibility of addressing the state’s economic challenges. The JMM will need to carefully balance its focus on welfare with efforts to boost the economy, create jobs, and ensure better use of the state’s resources.
