First Step. Hezbollah vs Israel. The Hindu Editorial Editorial Explanation 2nd December 2024.

In October 2023, Hezbollah, a powerful militant group based in Lebanon, started launching rockets into Israel. They did this in support of the Palestinians after the Israel-Hamas war erupted.

The leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said that they would stop firing rockets only if Israel also stopped its attacks on Gaza. This marked the beginning of another front of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, adding to the ongoing tensions in the region.

In response, on October 1, 2024, Israel launched a ground invasion into Lebanon. This was Israel’s fourth invasion into Lebanon.

The main goal of this invasion was to help the people of northern Israel who had been forced to leave their homes because of Hezbollah’s rocket attacks. Israel wanted to make sure these displaced people could return to their homes safely.

However, after nearly two months of fighting, both sides—Hezbollah and Israel—decided to agree to a ceasefire. The ceasefire deal was brokered by the United States and France. According to the agreement, Israel would withdraw its military forces from Lebanon, and Hezbollah would move its forces further north, beyond the Litani River. The Lebanese army would take control of the area between the Israeli border and the Litani River and would be in charge of enforcing the ceasefire.

Once the ceasefire was in place, both Israel and Hezbollah claimed they had won. Israel said that Hezbollah was no longer as powerful as before, while Hezbollah declared a “divine victory” over Israel. But the reality was that both sides suffered significant losses and didn’t achieve their full goals.

Hezbollah lost many of its fighters, including some of its top commanders. Israel’s bombings destroyed many of Hezbollah’s strongholds, including border villages and parts of the Dahiyeh, a Shia neighborhood in Beirut. Despite these attacks, Hezbollah was still able to continue firing rockets into Israel.

On November 24, 2023, Hezbollah launched over 250 rockets into Israel. Some of these rockets hit sensitive areas, including the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This showed that, despite Israel’s superior airpower, its attacks had not been able to stop Hezbollah from continuing its rocket fire. This failure by Israel was clear, as many Israelis believed Hezbollah was still capable of fighting and had not been defeated.

The fighting caused heavy losses on both sides, which led them to give up their original demands and agree to the ceasefire. Both sides wanted a break from the violence. Israel and Hezbollah had hoped for more decisive victories, but the results were mixed, and the conflict had become too costly for both sides.

Though the ceasefire brought a temporary pause in the fighting, there are concerns that it may not last long. If Israel continues its heavy attacks on Gaza, it could lead to further escalation, and both Israel and Hezbollah might rearm and renew their fight.

The United States, which helped broker the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, is now urged to use this moment to push for a ceasefire in Gaza as well. President Joe Biden has less than two months left in office, and it is suggested that he should use his influence to pressure Israel to stop its war on Gaza and reduce the suffering of the millions of Palestinians caught in the conflict.

In summary, after months of fighting, Israel and Hezbollah both suffered setbacks and agreed to a ceasefire, but neither achieved a clear victory.

This break in fighting is temporary, and without further peace efforts, it is uncertain how long the ceasefire will hold. The United States is encouraged to build on this momentum and work toward a ceasefire in Gaza to help reduce the violence and suffering in the region.
