This article published in the editorial section of The Hindu Newspaper tells the story of Abdul, a 15-year-old boy living in northern Gaza who was severely injured during an Israeli airstrike on February 10, 2024. Abdul was searching through abandoned homes, hoping to find food for his family, when the attack occurred. His leg was shattered, and he had to crawl for over an hour, surrounded by falling missiles, until someone finally found him and took him to the nearest hospital.
At the hospital, overwhelmed with casualties and lacking supplies, doctors had to operate on Abdul without anaesthesia, causing him immense pain. He was later evacuated from Gaza for further treatment in Egypt and then to a hospital run by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in Jordan. Seven months later, he is learning to walk again with crutches. While Abdul’s story has a hopeful outcome, it is just one among thousands of tragic stories from Gaza.
The situation in Gaza has become extremely dire. Israel’s blockade, which has been in place for 16 years, has turned into a nightmare in the past year. Since October 2023, more than 41,000 people have been killed, and an estimated 12,000 are in urgent need of medical evacuation. Unfortunately, only 41% of these evacuation requests have been approved by Israel. Many people in Gaza are unable to access healthcare due to destroyed hospitals, restricted movement, and the dangers of the ongoing violence. Out of 36 hospitals in Gaza, 17 are no longer functioning. Over 500 attacks have targeted healthcare facilities, crippling the ability to provide life-saving care. Essential supplies like surgical equipment, oxygen, and generators have been blocked or delayed, making many surgeries impossible and leading to preventable deaths.
In addition to the physical injuries, the war has caused deep psychological wounds. Over one million children in Gaza, like Abdul and others who have been physically and emotionally scarred by airstrikes, are in urgent need of mental health support. These children live in constant fear, having witnessed the destruction of their homes, the deaths of loved ones, and the daily bombardments. Their trauma will have lasting effects for decades to come.
The article also highlights that the Israeli blockade and the ongoing violence represent serious violations of international humanitarian law. It calls for an immediate ceasefire to address Gaza’s overwhelming medical and humanitarian needs. The article stresses that safe passage must be guaranteed for humanitarian aid, and the evacuation of critically ill or injured people, like Abdul, must be ensured. It also calls for the safe and dignified return of patients and their caregivers to Gaza once they have received medical treatment elsewhere.
Abdul’s story is a reminder of the real human cost of the war in Gaza. No child should have to endure the horrors of war, and the suffering in Gaza must come to an end. The article concludes by urging governments to act immediately to secure a ceasefire and ensure that the people of Gaza have access to the healthcare they desperately need to survive and rebuild their lives. It is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a global moral responsibility.
