First Responder, Maldives and India. The Hindu Editorial Explanation 11 October 2024.

This article is about how the Maldives and India are working to fix their relationship after a period of tension, especially since Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu took office.

At first, there was some distance between India and the Maldives. President Muizzu didn’t visit India immediately after becoming President, which is usually a tradition for neighbouring countries with good relations. His campaign had focused on the “India Out” movement, which called for reducing India’s presence in the Maldives. This created some tension between the two countries. During this time, Indian citizens were even encouraged to boycott the Maldives as a tourist destination.

Instead of India, Muizzu visited other countries like Turkey, China, and the UAE, which upset some people in India. Many in India were also concerned about the Maldives’ growing economic and defence ties with China. This was particularly worrying because India has always seen itself as a close and supportive neighbour to the Maldives.

However, things began to improve. President Muizzu asked for Indian troops that had been stationed in the Maldives for aircraft maintenance to be replaced by technical personnel. India agreed to this request, which helped ease the tension. After that, both countries started making efforts to cooperate again. Their foreign ministers exchanged visits, and they began announcing new joint projects.

India provided a lot of financial help to the Maldives, which was struggling with debt. India extended $100 million and helped with currency swap arrangements worth ₹3,000 crore (about $400 million), which helped stabilize the Maldives’ currency reserves. This financial support came at a critical time for the Maldives.

President Muizzu also toned down his earlier anti-India comments and even removed some of his ministers who had criticized Prime Minister Modi. He visited Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he encouraged more Indian tourists to visit the Maldives and promoted investment opportunities for Indians in his country.

In conclusion, the relationship between India and the Maldives is improving. The two countries are now working on joint projects, discussing a Free Trade Agreement, and looking at how they can work together on security matters. This turnaround shows that diplomacy, rather than aggressive posturing, can help resolve issues between countries. Both countries are benefiting from their close geographical and historical ties.
