On December 30, 2024, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched its PSLV-C60 mission, which carried a pair of satellites for the Space Docking Experiment, or SpaDeX.

The main goal was to test docking technology in space, where two satellites meet and attach to each other. This is a crucial step for future missions that require large spacecraft, as it allows parts to be assembled in space instead of on the ground.

The docking was initially planned for January 7 but was delayed several times. ISRO postponed it to January 9 and then to January 12, but the satellites were only brought close together, without docking, in what seemed like a data collection effort.

The attempt on January 9 had to be canceled after the satellites drifted more than expected, leading ISRO to adjust their positions before trying again. Finally, on January 16, the satellites successfully docked after overcoming some initial setbacks.

Once the docking was successful, ISRO conducted tests to ensure the satellites could exchange electrical power, undock, and then separate.

They also planned to test the satellites’ payloads over the next two years. The PSLV-C60 mission also launched the fourth stage of the rocket as an orbital platform, carrying 24 different payloads from ISRO centers and private companies.

One notable experiment, conducted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, involved growing cowpea seeds in space, which captured public interest.

Docking technology is vital because it allows space agencies to launch different components of a spacecraft separately and then assemble them in space.

This capability is particularly important for interplanetary missions, where spacecraft need to be heavier than what current rockets can carry in a single launch.

Docking technology is also key for long-duration space missions, like those to Mars, and for future space mining or satellite servicing operations.

ISRO made sure the SpaDeX satellites were well-prepared with enough fuel for multiple docking attempts.

They also collected data throughout the process, despite some delays and setbacks. Docking technology is becoming more important as space agencies plan for longer missions, and it could play a big role in future missions.

Looking ahead, ISRO plans to launch the ‘Bharatiya Antariksh Station’ (BAS) in the coming years.

As the organization enters a new phase with V. Narayanan as its new chairman, it will be important for ISRO to clearly explain the purpose of the BAS and how it fits into India’s broader space ambitions compared to other countries.
